Sultan came from Dallas where he was owned by a man who used young cats for photography.  People would be photographed holding them.  When these cats got too big to be held he would get rid of them.  Well, Monique received one of his "disposal quick!" phone calls.  The man said he "had a cat' and he threatened to shoot it if Monique didn't accept the young lion.  Naturally, he was given immediate residency at the Refuge.  Sultan was 5 months old, weighed only 25 pounds, was covered with ringworm, sores, severely malnourished and had not a hair on his head when he arrived!  He had been confined to a small carrier.  It would take all the Refuge's resources to pull him out of that pathetic state.

This picture shows how small Sultan was and how thin his  head, neck, shoulders and legs were, yet his belly was bloated from malnutrition.

i
n this picture you can see how small Sultan WAS compared to a baby cougar
