Sheena,
a female African lioness. Sheena arrived at the Refuge severely
malnourished, skinny with her ribs showing and covered with ringworm
and sores. She had been owned by a Dallas man who kept her in a
small carrier and used her to take pictures with people. Sultan, a
male lion came from this same Dallas man. These babies would go all
day without food so they could
be
photographed as much as possible and make as much money as possible.
When the cubs got too old, 3 to 6 months, he disposed of the them.
Sheena required much special care and under Monique's had she
eventually thrived. At a robust 800 pounds today, she now has
plenty of energy to play. She is often seen wearing her favorite
toy, an old tire, around her waist.
Her favorite companion was a Lab/Rottweiler mix dog, named King.
They played together constantly. When King passed away, it left
Sheena crying out loud for him. The weeks that followed were
difficult for her. She could hardly eat and would not come out to
play and exercise. Sometimes she carries a stuffed dog around with
her, perhaps as a mourning ritual.
