The Ringtail Cats -- Sparky,
Spanky and Sputnik
When the three ringtail cats arrived at the Refuge, they were tiny
little things. Only a week or so old, their eyes weren't even open
yet.
Their mother had taken up residence in a local farmer's pump house
and was killed, leaving them orphaned.
The three little babies lived in a basket in the bathroom, being
bottle fed round the clock and cleaned and groomed by Refuge
workers. They would chatter to us and we would chatter back.
Since they only come out at night, it is very difficult to get a
good picture of them but we are working on it.
Most people have never seen a “ringtail cat” and many haven’t even
heard of them. They are strictly nocturnal and quite shy.
They are found from Argentina to the southwestern United States. In
recent years they have extended their range northeastward into
Kansas, Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.
